*Please try to avoid stating the obvious about fire risks, obviously thats a factor as mentioned in the video, but there are many situations where it would not be. You gotta think outside the box. There is a reason why these were used thousands of years ago.

In this video I throw out the idea of sky lanterns as a primitive mode of comms, signalling and recon in a grid down situaton.

  1. i can make a better balloon than you. but mine would have a radio and light pulsing and use hydrogen gas I make on the spot where ever I am using electrolysis. no fire used to make it go up. and I use emp proof bags to put my transmitter in. I can also use morse code

  2. as a guy who flew and grew up in the hot air balloon world, I would not recommend it at all. You can only fly early in the morning or 1 hour before sunset, only if the winds are calm. Then once you fly, you need a crew with a truck to chase you on the ground. You have little control over your direction. You also need a LOT of propane and also gas for the fan to start the inflation (and the truck that follows you on the ground). It would not be a practical tool at all in SHTF 🙂

  3. I thought of a way to make your idea more durable and useful using LEDs lights and combining Sky Lantern paper with mylar blankets to make it more durable plus you can use for multiple use

  4. or use helium filled blimp 😛 . not bad idea though, tnx CP 😀 . Could you reuse the lantern, just replace burner? it would be great if tied to fishing line and retrieved after use.

  5. I can see this being very effective to guide rescuers to your location. I’ve read that during WW2, you were not allowed to smoke on the deck of a ship at night because the glow of a cigarette at night could be seen for miles. The balloon could be seen much farther. Good info as always CP.

  6. Would a box kite not be better , reusable and can lift a torch or strobe light into the air ,During daylight a length of aluminium foil would reflect the sunlight and flash like crazy as an emergency beacon .
As a radio amature , we use the quite stable box kites to lift long wire antennas ( 40m / 80m / 160m )aloft when out and about , especially iff we venture up on the moors or up a mountain .
