  1. You should send this to the military, took them an hour to describe this, then , the rest of the day putting to practice. Nicely done.

  2. You phone compass is probably magnetic, and magnetic compasses don’t point to true north. They point to magnetic north, and the north magnetic pole drifts around over time. Right now, for my location in western New York, a compass will point about 11 degrees west of true north. The difference is called the declination. Search “calculate magnetic declination” to find a site that will show the declination at your latitude and longitude. (It doesn’t change very quickly, so you don’t have to keep checking it all the time. But it’s a useful thing to know if you’re planning to use a compass.)
