The Lightning Strike Fire Starter is a fire steel to the max. It comes with a large ferro rod and with tinder (basically a Vaseline and cotton ball kind-of tinder), and it directs the sparks as you strike the fire steel. Yes, the cost is not low ($60 for the whole set-up), but it’s worth checking out if you want a serious fire steel system – check it out!

  1. actually it’s closer to $70 and that’s just a bit much. I enjoy using a reg Ferro rod and always keep some of my own kindling in a waterproof container just in case. could get a ‘nice’ knife for $70. But that’s just me.

  2. Nice review, thanks for taking the time to present the product. It ain’t cheap but it seems like a sure start, even in a windy situation you could cover the disc with the striking tube and get a positive result. Personally I use fat wood in Australia and it works without fail……when dry. For someone new with limited experience in a pressure situation this could make all the difference. Also I would guess you could use it one handed if required, which is a definite plus.
